Civil-Military Lens: Mexico Elections

THE BOTTOM LINE UP FRONT

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s (AMLO) tenure is coming to an end with Mexican elections just under 30 days away.  AMLO's time in office has been marked by increased state control and involvement in the private sector in Mexico.  Military involvement in non-traditional roles has also expanded from public security to notable participation in economic and civic activities on AMLO's watch.

This militarization strategy, diverging from initial promises to reduce military presence in public life, has blurred the nation's long term geoeconomic outlook.  Claudia Sheinbaum, the candidate most likely to succeed AMLO, has hinted at reframing the civil-military affairs if elected. However, Sheinbaum's ability to drive progress with corrective vision remains unclear.

In any event, Mexico's 2024 elections signal an inflection point, potentially ushering in the nation's first female president amid escalating military involvement in governance, which could alter the trajectory Mexico's geopolitical and economic landscape.
